Although / though / even though and in spite of / despite

How was your Sunday? For my side, it was a great Sunday.

Let further with English lesson. It is not easy for Thai people to use although, though, even though / in spite of / despite correctly. I have a conclusion of using all of the words I mentioned. Sure! I am making a copy from English Grammar in Use.

1) After although, we use a subject + verb
2) After in spite of or despite, we use a noun, a pronoun (this, that, what etc.) or ...ing.
3) We can say in spite of the fact that or despite the fact that (without of)

Although the traffic was bad, I arrived on time.
In spite of the traffic, I arrived on time.
Despite the traffic, I arrived on time.

Because of the traffice, I could not arrive on time.

I found some phrases about "or" and want to share with you.

'or so' = approximately
Ex. It takes an hour or so by train.

'or something/ or anything' = to say vaguely that you mean another thing of the same type
Ex. His name was Frank, or Fred, or something.
Would you like sandwich or anything?

'or else' = otherwise
They can't be home yet, or else they'd answer the phone.

'or rather...' = to correct or explain what you have said
We spent a few days in Bombay, or rather, Mumbai.

PS. Vague (adj) ; of uncertain, indefinite, or unclear character or meaning : Ex. Many patients suffer vague symptoms.

Unless / As long as / Provided (that) / Providing (that)

Good holiday!

I hope you are all happy with the first holiday of December. I did not know about the word "provided (that)" and "providing (that)" before. I just read it a few minutes ago. Of course, I wanna share with you all.

Provided (that) or providing (that) means "if" or "on condition that"
- She will not pass the examination provided (that) she studies hard.
- Providing (that) she studies hard, she will pass the examination.
- If she studies hard she will pass the examination.

- You can borrow the money, providing you promise me to return it within a week.
- Provided you promise me to return the money within a week, you can borrow it.

Note: When we are talking about the future, do not use will after provided (that) or providing (that). I would like to remind you to use a present tense in this case.

Between (...and) prep.,adv.ระหว่าง,ในระหว่าง จะใช้เมื่อเราเปรียบเทียบคนหรือสิ่งของ 2 อย่าง



Among = prep. ในระหว่าง, ในหมู่, ในจำพวก จะใช้เมื่อเราเปรียบเทียบคนหรือสิ่งของตั้งแต่ 3 อย่างขึ้นไป


วิธีจำง่าย ๆ คือ 2 อย่างใช้ between และ 3 อย่างขึ้นไปใช้ among

Peter and Susan were hoping to divide the money between the two of them (เห็นมั้ยค่ะว่ามีแค่คนสองคน คือ Peter กับ Susan), but Billy and Cole wanted the money to be distributed among all the people (เอ๊ะๆๆ สงสัยล่ะซิค่ะว่าทำไมไม่ใช้ between all the people ไม่ได้นะซิค่ะ เพราะเราพูดถึงคน4 คนที่จะต้องแบ่งผลประโยชน์กันนะคะ) who took part in the project
