ประโยคหนึ่งจากหนังสือพิมพ์ Bangkok Post
'Prosecutors push for Democrat ban.' อัยการเสนอร่างยุบพรรคประชาธิปัตย์

push แปลว่า ผลัก ดัน ถ้าคุณ push for อะไรบางอย่างแสดงว่าคุณรณรงค์หรือเรียกร้องเพื่อให้สิ่งนั้นเกิดขึ้น

Prosecutor = อัยการ
push for = อยากได้ ต้องการ เสนอ
Democrat ban = การยุบพรรคปชป.

เคยไหม? ที่มีใครทักคุณว่าโกรธเสียจน 'หน้าแดง' ไม่แน่ว่าหน้าของคุณขณะนั้นอาจจะแดงจริงๆ หรือไม่ก็เป็นการพูดเชิงเปรียบเทียบว่าคุณโกรธจัดมีอารมณ์ร้อนผ่าว อาการโกรธในลักษณะนี้ภาษาอังกฤษเองก็มีเช่นกัน และยังบรรยายโดยใช้คำที่คล้ายคลึงในรูปแบบของ idiom อีกด้วย นั่นคือ see red

An idiom

An idiom คืือ อะไร
คือ สำนวนในภาษาไทย อาจเป็นคำ หรือวลี หรือประโยคที่ใช้ก้นมาตั้งแต่ครั้งสมัยโบราณกาลบางคำมีอายุมากกว่าสองพันปี ความหมายก่อให้เกิดความฉงนเมื่อได้ฟังเนื่องจากความหมายไม่ตรงตามตัวอักษรเสียทีเดียว แต่เป็นถ้อยคำในเชิงเปรียบเทียบเปรียบเปรยหรือประชดประชันในที ทำให้มีความหมายลึกซึ้งกว่าำคำพูดกันโดยทัี่วไป
เช่น
- absent-minded หมายถึง ใจลอย,ขาดสมาธิ
= forgetful, without concentration on what one is doing.
Ex : An absent-minded driver can be very dangerous on the road.
(เป็นเรื่องอันตรายมาก ถ้าคนขับรถขาดสมาธิในการขับรถ)

- bed of roses หมายถึง หนทางที่ราบรื่นเหมือนโรยด้วยกลีบกุหลาบ, ไม่มีอุปสรรค
= pleasant, trouble free.
Ex : Tom built up this business empire by himself. Life hasn't been a bed of
roses for him.

- big heart ไม่ใช่แปลว่าหัวใจใหญ่นะคะ แต่หมายถึง ใจดี ,มีเมตตาค่ะ
= kindness to the others/where a person is happy to give, be generous.
Ex : Our boss is very strict but he has a big heart though.
(ถึงแม้เจ้านายของเราเป็นคนเข้มงวดมากแต่เขาก็ใจดี)

ิ- born with a silver spoon in (one's) mouth หมายถึง คาบช้อนเงินช้อนทองมาเกิด
มีพ่อแม่รวย หรือกล่าวถึงผุ้่ที่มักโชคดีเสมอ
= having rich parents, or always lucky and successful.
Ex : She must have been born with a silver spoon in her mouth; whatever
business she starts is very successful.
(เธอเป็นผู้ที่มักโชคดีเสมอ ไม่ว่าจะจับธุรกิจใด จะทำงานอะไรก็สำเร็จไปหมด)

- cry for the moon หมายถึง หวังในสิ่งที่เ็ป็นเจ้าของไม่ได้
= wanting something that is impossible to get
Ex : " You' re crying for the moon, Jo , the Cosmo project is out of your reach."
(โจ ฉันว่าเธอกำลังหวังสูงเกินไปในสิ่งที่เป็นไปไม่ได้ โครงการใหญ่เกินความสามารถบริษัทเล็กๆ

มัฟฟิน ท๊อป ก็คืออาการที่พุงกะทิหลามออกมานอกขอบกางเกงหรือกระโปรง รูปทรงคล้ายกับขนมมัฟฟิน คนที่บรรญัติศัพท์คำนี้น่าจะเป็นชาวออสซี่นะ ความจริงคำที่ใช้เรียกในภาษาอังกฤษคือคำว่า love handle ครับ love handle ก็มีที่มาน่ารักๆ ก็คือเวลาที่เรากอดใครสักคน เจ้า love handle ตัวนี้ก็คือบริเวณ เอว หรือท้องที่มารองรับอ้อมกอดของความรักนั่นเอง เป็นไงน่ารักใช่มั้ยครับ
